Superhero Gala Murder Mystery Party
Capes at the coat check, secret identities at the bar, and one hero down.
6-16 players, sweet spot 10 · the full kit is ready in about 20 minutes. Or name your guests and see who they play, with the opening scene, free in about 30 seconds.
The city's heroes only gather once a year, in tuxedos and gowns, for the charity gala that funds the rebuilding after their own battles. The mayor is here. The billionaire benefactor is here. The retired hero, the rookie, the reformed villain, and the reporter who knows too much are all here. Powers are meant to be left at the door. Then the city's most famous hero collapses under the chandelier, and it turns out invulnerability had a clause.
Playing it feels like a comic book crossover event where every panel is an accusation. Everyone has an alter ego, a nemesis, and a secret that would end their franchise. Clues hide in cufflinks, press badges, and the gala seating chart. Accusations are dramatic, occasionally in the third person. Your kit assigns each guest a hero, villain, or civilian, a hidden identity, and clues to unmask. The reveal is the splash page, and the cape does not always belong to who you think.
Perfect for
A hit for birthday parties, comic-con weekends, Halloween, and family-friendly mixed-age gatherings, with plenty of room for a work team that likes a costume.
Cast size
6-16 players, sweet spot 10. Every kit is written for your exact headcount and gender mix, so nobody doubles up and nobody sits out.
Who is at the party
A taste of the cast a superhero gala kit produces. Your mystery is written fresh, with its own suspects, secrets, and one guilty guest.
The Retired Hero
Hung up the cape after a very public failure, is here as the gala's guest of honour, and never forgave the successor.
The Reformed Villain
Now runs a foundation, got a seat at the head table, and kept one gadget from the old days.
The Investigative Reporter
Has figured out three secret identities and is about to publish, and needed one more confirmation tonight.
The Rookie Sidekick
Wants a solo title, was promised a promotion by the victim, and had the only access to the trophy room.
Setting the scene
Costumes
- A tuxedo or cocktail dress with a domino mask, the gala uniform for any hero with a secret to keep.
- A cape made from a thrift-store curtain, pinned at the shoulders of an otherwise formal outfit.
- A rumpled suit, press badge, and a notepad for the reporter who knows who is under the masks.
- A metallic bodysuit or a shiny bomber jacket with a printed emblem for the hero whose brand is loud.
- Dark glasses, a sharp suit, and a single black glove for the villain who insists they have reformed.
Food and drink
- A kryptonite cocktail: midori, lime, and soda, glowing green under a UV light if you have one.
- Hors d'oeuvres passed on silver trays: stuffed mushrooms, mini quiches, and shrimp on skewers, gala style.
- A blue raspberry lemonade with a lightning-bolt sugar rim for the sidekicks and the designated drivers.
- A layered cake in the city's hero colours, sliced only after the villain is unmasked.
Atmosphere
- Hang a printed skyline silhouette along one wall and light it from below with coloured bulbs.
- Set out gala place cards with each guest's hero alias on the front and a blank for their civilian name on the back.
- Playlist: orchestral movie soundtracks and brassy fanfares, with a dramatic sting for each accusation.
- Put a spotlight (a desk lamp or phone torch) on an empty display plinth as the trophy that went missing.
Host tip
Give every guest two name cards: one with their hero alias and one with their civilian identity. Ask them to swap between them as they talk; it teaches everyone that identities are the game's currency. Keep a fanfare sound effect ready for entrances. For the accusation round, dim the lights and have each player deliver their accusation in a hero pose. Read the solution as the mayor's speech, and unmask the killer by removing a domino mask.
How your kit comes together
Set the table
Pick Superhero Gala, your player count and gender mix, the difficulty, and the tone: campy, dramatic, or dark. Add your guests' real names if you like.
We write the mystery
A complete, original plot with a victim, a killer, red herrings, and a web of clues that lets the table solve it. Usually 15-25 minutes; we email you when it is ready.
Print and play
Download the host guide, one booklet per character, name tags and ballots. Or send each player a private link to read their part on their phone.
Questions hosts ask
Can the superhero gala mystery be played with kids and adults together?
Yes. Set the tone to cozy in the customize step for a bloodless, comic-book feel, and cast younger players as sidekicks and reporters. Gather & Gasp booklets are written plainly, so a confident ten-year-old can play alongside adults, and no acting experience is needed.
Are the heroes based on Marvel or DC characters?
No. The kit invents its own heroes, villains, and city so nothing depends on knowing a franchise. Guests can style their costumes after favourites, but the characters, powers, and secrets are original and generated fresh for your party.
How many guests does a gala need to feel full?
Ten is the sweet spot: enough heroes, villains, and civilians to make identities interesting. The kit supports 4 to 20 players and prints in about 20 minutes, so a big Halloween crowd works fine.
