Wizard's Academy Murder Mystery Party
A professor is dead, the wands are drawn, and exams are cancelled.
6-16 players, sweet spot 10 · the full kit is ready in about 20 minutes. Or name your guests and see who they play, with the opening scene, free in about 30 seconds.
Thornwick Academy of the Arcane Arts is the finest school of magic in the realm, or so its prospectus claims. Tonight is the end-of-year Grand Feast in the great hall, with floating candles, the house cup on the high table, and a faculty who have spent the term quietly loathing each other. Students have their own grudges: exam results, house points, a duelling final that ended badly. The headmaster rises to give the closing toast, and one professor's chair at the high table is empty.
The academy plays as a school reunion with spells. Students accuse professors, professors accuse students, and the house rivalries give everyone a side to take. Guests compare who was in the library, who was in detention, and who had a key to the potions stores. Spells become alibis and alibis become spells. The reveal comes in the great hall with the house cup on the line, as the whole school votes on who gets expelled for good.
Perfect for
Book-club friends, adult birthday parties, and family gatherings where the teenagers have opinions about which house everyone would be sorted into.
Cast size
6-16 players, sweet spot 10. Every kit is written for your exact headcount and gender mix, so nobody doubles up and nobody sits out.
Who is at the party
A taste of the cast a wizard's academy kit produces. Your mystery is written fresh, with its own suspects, secrets, and one guilty guest.
The Headmaster
Has run the academy for forty years and knows which secret passages lead where, though he claims never to use them.
The Potions Mistress
Keeps the only key to the ingredient stores, and has recently mislaid it, which she mentions only when asked directly.
The Head Student
Top of every class and shortlisted for the professorship that has just, tragically, come open.
The Groundskeeper
Sees everything from the edge of the grounds and was out with a lantern during the feast for reasons he will not give.
Setting the scene
Costumes
- A black graduation gown or a long dark dressing gown with a striped scarf in your chosen house colours.
- A tweed jacket with elbow patches, a bow tie, and half-moon reading glasses for the faculty.
- A cardigan over a white shirt and tie, a wooden spoon wand, and a satchel full of paperback textbooks.
- A waxed jacket, wellies, and a lantern for the groundskeeper who never comes inside.
- A pointed hat from a costume shop and a velvet cape from the Halloween box for anyone going full wizard.
Food and drink
- A feast of roast chicken, roast potatoes, and Yorkshire puddings served family-style down the long table.
- A frothy 'butter brew' of cream soda, butterscotch syrup, and whipped cream, with a splash of rum for the faculty version.
- Cauldron cakes, chocolate cupcakes in black cases with a green icing swirl, and a jar of jelly beans of dubious flavour.
- Treacle tart or apple crumble with custard, served in the traditional academy manner, which is generously.
Atmosphere
- Battery candles hung on fishing line from the ceiling, or a strip of warm bulbs, for the great hall glow.
- Play choral and orchestral fantasy scores, plus a school bell recording between acts.
- Hang house banners made from felt or coloured paper and keep a house-points tally on a chalkboard.
- Set a long table with mismatched goblets, a stack of old hardbacks, and a potion bottle at each place.
Host tip
Sort your guests into houses before the party and give each house a colour and a point tally. It creates instant alliances and gives the accusations a team energy. The house-points board doubles as a pacing tool: award points for good deductions each round. Keep a stack of old books on the table as clue hiding places, and hold the reveal with the house cup in the middle so the winning house can claim it.
How your kit comes together
Set the table
Pick Wizard's Academy, your player count and gender mix, the difficulty, and the tone: campy, dramatic, or dark. Add your guests' real names if you like.
We write the mystery
A complete, original plot with a victim, a killer, red herrings, and a web of clues that lets the table solve it. Usually 15-25 minutes; we email you when it is ready.
Print and play
Download the host guide, one booklet per character, name tags and ballots. Or send each player a private link to read their part on their phone.
Questions hosts ask
Is this a Harry Potter murder mystery?
It is a magic-school mystery in that tradition, with original characters and its own academy, so nothing borrows names or plots from any franchise. Gather & Gasp writes each kit fresh, and you can shape the school in the customisation step.
Can adults and teenagers play together?
Yes, and the setting suits it: adults naturally play the faculty and teenagers the students. Set the tone to campy or dramatic when you create the kit to keep it school-appropriate, and everyone from 4 to 20 players gets a booklet.
How long does the party take?
Most groups run the mystery in ninety minutes to two hours across a meal. The kit generates in about twenty minutes and prints at home, and the host guide gives you a simple act structure to follow.
