Summer Camp Counselors Murder Mystery Party

The campfire is out, the lake is quiet, and one counselor missed roll call.

6-16 players, sweet spot 10 · the full kit is ready in about 20 minutes. Or name your guests and see who they play, with the opening scene, free in about 30 seconds.

It is the last night of the season at the lake. The campers have gone home, the canoes are stacked, and the counselors have the mess hall to themselves for the end-of-summer bonfire. There are s'mores, a talent show, and a lot of unfinished business from eight weeks in shared cabins. At morning roll call, one counselor does not answer. The lifeguard chair is empty. The camp director wants it handled quietly. Nobody is leaving until the last bus.

Playing it feels like a campfire story where you are all the characters. Cabin rivalries, colour-war grudges, a stolen master key to the boathouse. Everyone knows the camp's rules and everyone has broken one. Clues appear in logbooks, mail-call letters, and the nurse's cabin. Accusations get whispered on the dock and shouted in the mess hall. Your kit gives each guest a staff role, a secret, and clues to chase. The reveal plays like the final flag-lowering, with a name on the flag.

Perfect for

A joyful pick for summer birthdays, cabin weekends, and friend groups who went to camp or wish they had, and a low-pressure option for teen and mixed-age parties.

Cast size

6-16 players, sweet spot 10. Every kit is written for your exact headcount and gender mix, so nobody doubles up and nobody sits out.

Who is at the party

A taste of the cast a summer camp counselors kit produces. Your mystery is written fresh, with its own suspects, secrets, and one guilty guest.

The Head Counselor

Has run the summer program for six seasons, keeps every key on one lanyard, and has been told this season is the last.

The Lifeguard

Sees the whole lake from the chair, missed a shift for the first time all summer, and cannot explain where they were.

The Arts and Crafts Instructor

Runs the lodge nobody checks, keeps a very tidy kiln, and found something in the clay bin.

The Camper Turned Counselor

Grew up here, knows every trail and every rumour, and remembers an incident from five summers ago that nobody else mentions.

Setting the scene

Costumes

  • A camp-logo T-shirt (iron on a fake pine-tree logo), khaki shorts, and a whistle on a lanyard for the counselor.
  • Red swim shorts or a red tank, zinc on the nose, and a rescue float or pool noodle for the lifeguard.
  • A flannel shirt, cargo pants, and a headlamp for the outdoor education lead who lives in the woods.
  • A tie-dye shirt and a fanny pack full of friendship bracelets for the arts and crafts instructor.
  • A polo, khakis, and a clipboard for the camp director who answers to the board.

Food and drink

  • A s'mores station with graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate, and a candle or tabletop burner for toasting.
  • Bug juice: a giant jug of red fruit punch, unashamedly artificial and fully non-alcoholic.
  • Hot dogs and foil-packet campfire nachos served in enamel camping bowls.
  • A spiked lemonade with a splash of bourbon and a mint sprig for the after-hours counselors' cabin.

Atmosphere

  • String warm bulb lights across the ceiling and hang paper lanterns for the mess hall bonfire feel.
  • Pin a hand-lettered cabin roster to the wall and cross a name off with red marker at the start.
  • Playlist: acoustic campfire guitar and summer pop, with a bugle call sound effect to start each round.
  • Set the table with enamel mugs, checked tablecloths, and a Mason jar of pine branches as a centrepiece.

Host tip

Sound a bugle call (a phone sound effect works) to open and close each round, the way camp runs on a schedule. Give every guest a friendship bracelet in their cabin's colour when they arrive; it helps players track alliances at a glance. Do the accusation round around a real or LED campfire with the lights off. For the reveal, lower a paper flag and read the solution as the last announcement of the season.

How your kit comes together

1

Set the table

Pick Summer Camp Counselors, your player count and gender mix, the difficulty, and the tone: campy, dramatic, or dark. Add your guests' real names if you like.

2

We write the mystery

A complete, original plot with a victim, a killer, red herrings, and a web of clues that lets the table solve it. Usually 15-25 minutes; we email you when it is ready.

3

Print and play

Download the host guide, one booklet per character, name tags and ballots. Or send each player a private link to read their part on their phone.

Questions hosts ask

Is a summer camp murder mystery suitable for teenagers?

Yes. The theme is naturally lighter, the costumes are shorts and T-shirts, and Gather & Gasp lets you set the tone to cozy, keeping the story bloodless and funny. Kits scale from 4 to 20 players and need no acting experience.

Can I run this outdoors at an actual campsite or cabin?

It is perfect for that. Print the booklets before you leave (there is no signal at most lakes), bring a headlamp for reading clues, and run the rounds around the fire. The host guide works anywhere you can sit in a circle.

How long does a camp-themed mystery take to play?

About ninety minutes to two hours, including a snack break. The kit generates in about 20 minutes, and the host guide's round structure fits neatly between dinner and a late swim.
