Country Club Gala Murder Mystery Party
Old money, new members, and a club president who never reaches the back nine.
6-16 players, sweet spot 10 · the full kit is ready in about 20 minutes. Or name your guests and see who they play, with the opening scene, free in about 30 seconds.
The annual gala at a country club that has spent a century deciding who belongs. A Saturday in June, the terrace strung with lights over the eighteenth green. The membership committee has just voted, the president has announced a renovation nobody asked for, and everyone would rather be in the bar. At the tables: a tennis pro with a wealthy student, a new-money member who paid double the initiation, a treasurer with a spreadsheet problem, and a founding family's last heir. The president leaves for the locker room before the toast. The toast waits a long time.
A country club mystery plays like a committee meeting where everyone has a lawyer. Players accuse each other in the language of handicaps, initiation fees, and who was seen at the halfway house. Every alibi involves a tee time. Secrets come out over the crab cakes: an embezzlement, a blackballed application, an affair in the tennis hut, a sale of the club to developers. The waitstaff have seen everything and been tipped to forget it. The reveal is delivered as the raffle would be, from the podium, and one member's smile goes very tight.
Perfect for
A natural for corporate events, golf-weekend birthdays, retirement parties, alumni reunions, summer dinner parties, and any group that has ever gossiped about a membership committee.
Cast size
6-16 players, sweet spot 10. Every kit is written for your exact headcount and gender mix, so nobody doubles up and nobody sits out.
Who is at the party
A taste of the cast a country club gala kit produces. Your mystery is written fresh, with its own suspects, secrets, and one guilty guest.
The Club Treasurer
He has balanced the books for twelve years and has recently started balancing them in his own favour.
The New Money Member
She paid double the initiation to skip the waiting list and has been reminded of it at every dinner since.
The Tennis Pro
Handsome, underpaid, and giving private lessons to a member whose spouse sits on the disciplinary committee.
The Founding Family's Heir
Her great-grandfather laid out the course, and the president's renovation plan bulldozes his name off the clubhouse.
Setting the scene
Costumes
- A navy blazer with gold buttons, khakis or white trousers, a striped tie, and loafers with no socks for the committee men.
- A pastel golf polo, a visor, a pleated skirt or shorts, and a glove tucked in the waistband for the golf pro or the ladies' champion.
- A tennis dress or whites with a sweater knotted over the shoulders and a racquet under the arm for the tennis pro.
- A cocktail dress with pearls and a clutch, or a floral maxi with big sunglasses, for the gala's most dangerous guests.
- A white shirt, black trousers, a bow tie, and a tray for the waiter who has been tipped to forget what he saw.
Food and drink
- Crab cakes with remoulade, shrimp cocktail in coupe glasses, and mini beef sliders passed on trays.
- A carving station of prime rib with horseradish cream and a Caesar salad, or a clubhouse classic like chicken piccata.
- Gin and tonics, an Arnold Palmer with a shot of vodka (the 'John Daly'), and a bottle of Chardonnay that costs more than the raffle prize.
- Non-alcoholic: a proper Arnold Palmer of iced tea and lemonade, or a Shirley Temple for the junior members.
Atmosphere
- White tablecloths, hurricane lamps, and low centrepieces of white hydrangeas, with green napkins folded like putting greens.
- A printed gala programme at each seat with the evening's honourees, and a 'raffle' bowl that becomes the accusation box.
- A playlist of Sinatra, bossa nova, and a string-quartet cover of a pop song the members would never admit to knowing.
- A putter and a golf bag propped in the corner, a shelf of thrifted trophies as the trophy case, and a 'MEMBERS ONLY' sign on the bar.
Host tip
Use the podium. Country club galas run on announcements, so appoint yourself master of ceremonies and use a microphone (or a wooden spoon) to open each accusation round with a mock award: 'Best Alibi', 'Most Suspicious Tee Time'. It keeps a big room moving and gives the shy players cover. Print a fake membership ledger with a few names crossed off and leave it on the bar. Read the reveal as if announcing the raffle winner, envelope and all.
How your kit comes together
Set the table
Pick Country Club Gala, your player count and gender mix, the difficulty, and the tone: campy, dramatic, or dark. Add your guests' real names if you like.
We write the mystery
A complete, original plot with a victim, a killer, red herrings, and a web of clues that lets the table solve it. Usually 15-25 minutes; we email you when it is ready.
Print and play
Download the host guide, one booklet per character, name tags and ballots. Or send each player a private link to read their part on their phone.
Questions hosts ask
Is a country club mystery a good choice for a corporate event?
It is one of the best. The setting is familiar, the dress code is easy (blazer, cocktail dress), and the intrigue is about committees, budgets, and who got blackballed, which every office understands. Gather & Gasp kits scale from 4 to 20 players, use your colleagues' names, and are ready in about 20 minutes.
Do we need to play at an actual golf club?
No. A dining room with white tablecloths, hurricane lamps, and a golf bag in the corner is a clubhouse. If you can book a real club's private room, even better, but the game happens at the table with printable booklets. No acting experience needed; a knotted sweater does the work.
Can we make it about our own club or our own committee?
Yes. Describe your club, its quirks, and its real (or invented) feuds when you create the kit, and the generator weaves them in without naming anyone who might sue. Hosts run it for club anniversaries, captain's dinners, and retirement roasts.
