How to host a murder mystery party for 20 people

How do I host a murder mystery party for 20 people?

You can host 20 people with one kit written for the whole group. Gather & Gasp writes a kit for exactly 20 players from $19.99, which is the largest size it makes, with a character, secrets and a goal for every guest. Plan for Epic length (3 to 4 hours, 4 rounds), a big room and a host who keeps the clock.

Twenty is the ceiling, and it works

Twenty is the maximum player count for a Gather & Gasp kit, and the kit is written for twenty characters from the start. You do not need to stretch a smaller game or buy two and combine them.

Every one of the twenty characters has a real role. That matters at this size, where filler characters would leave a quarter of the room with nothing to do.

What if you have more than 20?

Above twenty, a single kit does not cover you. Some hosts run two parallel mysteries in separate rooms with two kits, each with its own host and solution, then bring both groups together for a shared finale.

The 3-kit bundle is $44.99, which is the cheapest way to cover several groups. For a company event, tell us your team size at /team-building.

Controlling the chaos

Twenty people talking is loud. Structure keeps it fun. Use party mode so the host steps through the evening on their phone and each guest's page unlocks round by round. Everyone gets the same signal at the same time.

Tell guests at the start that each round has a start and an end, and that you will call time. Use a bell, a glass or a playlist cue.

  • Two co-hosts help: one for timing, one for food and drinks.
  • Put the name tag on at the door so people can find characters.
  • Ask guests to find four or five new people each round, not all nineteen.

Pacing and length

Epic (4 rounds, 3 to 4 hours) is the natural choice for twenty. Classic (3 rounds, 2 to 3 hours) can work if you keep sharing time short and start promptly.

Allow extra time at the end. Twenty accusation ballots take a few minutes to count, and the reveal deserves your guests' full attention.

Space and food

Twenty people need more than a living room. Think of a restaurant back room, a community space, a backyard or a rented hall. Check the venue's rules about printing, decorations and noise, and confirm you have wifi or signal for the phone pages.

Order the food. A caterer, a taco bar or a few big trays makes more sense than home cooking for twenty. Serve it before round one and again before the last round.

Cancellations at twenty

At twenty, a few cancellations are normal. The host can play a missing character, or you can redistribute their key information. For a larger shift, generate a fresh kit for the new headcount. It takes 15 to 25 minutes, and large groups can take a bit longer.

Themes that fit

Questions hosts ask

How many people can play a murder mystery?

Gather & Gasp writes kits for 4 to 20 players. Twenty is the maximum, and the kit is written for exactly that number.

Will the game work with that many people?

Yes, with structure. Use party mode, call time at the end of each round, and ask guests to find a few new people each round rather than everyone.

Do I need a special kit for 20?

No. Set the player count to 20 in the builder and the kit is written for twenty characters. You do not need to expand a smaller game.

Do I need a venue?

Probably. Twenty guests need room to move, so a large home, a hall or a restaurant room works better than a living room.

What if I have more than 20 guests?

Split into two groups with two kits, or, for a company event, tell us your size at /team-building.
