馃嵒 Holiday 路 Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest Beer Hall Murder Mystery Party
Steins, oompah, and a brewmaster found cold in his own cellar.
6-20 players, sweet spot 12 路 the full kit is ready in about 20 minutes. Or name your guests and see who they play, with the opening scene, free in about 30 seconds.
A beer hall in Munich during Oktoberfest. The tables are long, the pretzels are huge, and the brewmaster has invited the whole town to taste the new Marzen. On the benches: a rival brewer from across the river, a barmaid who carries ten steins and more grudges, the brewmaster's estranged son, a hops merchant owed a fortune, a city inspector who checks the Reinheitsgebot, and the oompah band's tuba player who never seems to play. The tapping of the first keg goes well. The brewmaster does not come up from the cellar.
An Oktoberfest mystery plays loud, warm, and suspiciously cheerful. Players toast, link arms, and accuse in the same breath. Every alibi involves a keg, a bench, or a bratwurst. Secrets surface between songs: a stolen yeast strain, a tampered recipe, a brewery about to be sold, a barmaid's tips that do not add up. The band plays 'Ein Prosit' and the whole room stands, which makes it very easy to notice who did not. The reveal is delivered from the bandstand, stein raised, and one toast goes unanswered.
Perfect for
Built for Oktoberfest (mid-September through early October), beer-lover birthdays, brewery tours, corporate team nights, and rowdy friend groups who want a mystery they can sing through.
Cast size
6-20 players, sweet spot 12. Every kit is written for your exact headcount and gender mix, so nobody doubles up and nobody sits out.
Who is at the party
A taste of the cast a oktoberfest beer hall kit produces. Your mystery is written fresh, with its own suspects, secrets, and one guilty guest.
The Rival Brewer
Her brewery across the river lost the festival contract to the brewmaster's, and she arrived tonight with her own yeast in her pocket.
The Head Barmaid
She carries ten steins in two hands, knows every regular's debt, and was the last person down the cellar stairs with the keys.
The Estranged Son
Cut out of the brewery when he left for Berlin, he is back for the tapping with a lawyer's letter in his lederhosen.
The Purity Inspector
He checks every batch against the 1516 law and has been paid, twice, to look the other way on one of them.
Setting the scene
Costumes
- A checked shirt (blue or red gingham) with suspenders and shorts or rolled trousers for the lederhosen look on a budget.
- A dirndl-style outfit from a white blouse, a fitted bodice or corset top, a full skirt, and an apron tied at the front.
- A felt hat with a feather stuck in the band, a wool vest, and wool socks pulled up for the brewmaster or the hops merchant.
- A long apron, sleeves rolled, a bar towel over the shoulder, and a permanent scowl for the barmaid or the cellarman.
- A grey suit, a clipboard, and a pair of spectacles for the inspector who nobody invited and nobody wants.
Food and drink
- Soft pretzels the size of your head with beer cheese and grainy mustard, piled on wooden boards down the table.
- Bratwurst, weisswurst, and sauerkraut with potato salad, served from one big platter to the whole bench.
- A litre stein of Marzen or a Helles lager, plus a Radler (beer and lemonade) for the guests pacing themselves.
- Non-alcoholic: apple schorle (apple juice and sparkling water), or a non-alcoholic wheat beer, which most German breweries make well.
Atmosphere
- Long tables and benches with blue-and-white checked tablecloths and a pretzel garland hung above them.
- Bavarian flags, a paper 'Willkommen' banner, and a wooden keg (or a cardboard one) with a tap as the centrepiece.
- A playlist of oompah brass and Bavarian folk, with 'Ein Prosit' every twenty minutes and everyone required to stand.
- Steins at every place setting, a chalkboard 'beer list' with the night's suspects on it, and a cellar door sign on the kitchen.
Host tip
Use the toasts as a timer. Play 'Ein Prosit' every twenty minutes, make everyone stand and clink, and use the moment to move to the next round of accusations. It keeps a big, loud table on schedule without anyone feeling rushed. Prepare a 'cellar' (a closed door with a sign) that only the barmaid's keys open, and make the keys a prop that changes hands. Deliver the reveal from a chair at the head of the table, stein raised, and ask for one last toast.
How your kit comes together
Set the table
Pick Oktoberfest Beer Hall, your player count and gender mix, the difficulty, and the tone: campy, dramatic, or dark. Add your guests' real names if you like.
We write the mystery
A complete, original plot with a victim, a killer, red herrings, and a web of clues that lets the table solve it. Usually 15-25 minutes; we email you when it is ready.
Print and play
Download the host guide, one booklet per character, name tags and ballots. Or send each player a private link to read their part on their phone.
Questions hosts ask
Can we run an Oktoberfest murder mystery at a real beer hall or brewery?
Yes, and many breweries will rent a bench or a back room. Bring the printable booklets and the host guide, and let the brewery provide the steins. Gather & Gasp generates the kit for your names and headcount (4-20 players) in about 20 minutes, so it fits a booked tour or a tasting.
Is this theme only for September and October?
It peaks then, but a beer hall is a year-round room. Hosts run it for beer-lover birthdays, Christmas markets, and 'Oktoberfest in March' with no complaints. Tell the generator the date and it adjusts the festival details.
Will it work if some guests do not drink?
Completely. The mystery is about the brewery, not the beer, and the booklets give every character a reason to be there. Serve apple schorle and non-alcoholic wheat beer in proper steins so nobody feels left out of the toast. No acting experience needed; standing and clinking counts.
