Boxed vs printable murder mystery kits: which should you buy?

Updated

Should I buy a boxed murder mystery game or a printable kit?

Buy a boxed game if you want physical props and your group matches its player count exactly. Choose a printable kit if you want to host sooner, and a custom-written kit like Gather & Gasp if you want the cast sized to your guest list and written around your friends. Custom kits start at $19.99 for the whole party, printed at home.

The three kinds of kit

Boxed games are physical products. You buy them once, wait for them to arrive (or pick one up in a shop), and the box holds the props, cards and character materials. They usually come with a fixed cast, written once for everyone who buys that title.

Pre-written printable kits are the same idea as a download. Someone wrote the mystery ahead of time, you buy a file, and you print it yourself. The cast is still fixed, so a kit written for eight players is an eight-player game.

A custom-written kit is made for your party after you order. At Gather & Gasp you pick a theme, set a headcount from 4 to 20, and add your guests. The kit is written from scratch for that group, then you print it at home.

Cast size and flexibility

Cast size is where the three differ most. A boxed game or a pre-written kit is built for a set number of players. If your group is a different size, someone plays two parts, someone sits out, or the host trims the cast and hopes the clues still add up.

If a guest cancels the day before, a boxed game is the hardest to adjust, because you cannot reprint a box. A printable file can be reprinted, but the story is still the same story.

A custom kit is written for your exact headcount, so every character has a real role in the plot. If someone cancels, the host can play that character, redistribute their key information, or generate a fresh kit for the new headcount, which takes another 15 to 25 minutes.

Personalization

Boxed and pre-written kits cast your friends as characters that already exist. Guests pick a role and play it, which is fun, but the jokes were written for strangers.

A custom kit uses your guests' names, and one detail you tell us about each person is woven into their character and the plot. The premium kit ($29.99) adds a painted portrait of every character, inside jokes worked into clues and quirks, and a personal subplot for each guest. Details stay affectionate: teasing, never embarrassing.

Waiting versus printing at home

A boxed game has to be delivered or bought in person, so you plan around that wait. A printable kit skips the mail and a custom kit adds only the writing time. Ours is usually ready in 15 to 25 minutes, and we email you when it is done.

The trade is that printable kits need a printer, paper and some ink. Everything prints on letter or A4 paper. Color looks best, but black and white works. If you have no printer at home, a print shop or office can run the files.

Replayability and price

A boxed game is a one-time mystery. Once your friends know who did it, the box is done unless you play with a new group. Pre-written printables work the same way. A custom kit is a new story each time, so you can host again with the same friends and nobody has played it.

On price, boxed games are physical products you pay for once, and the cost depends on the title. Pre-written downloads are usually cheaper than boxes. A Gather & Gasp standard kit is $19.99 and a premium kit is $29.99 for the whole party, not per guest. A 3-kit bundle is $44.99.

When a boxed game is the better choice

Be honest about what you want. If you love holding physical props, want production values you cannot print at home, or your group is exactly the size the box was written for, a boxed game is a good choice. A pre-written kit also works well if you want a known story and a fixed size is fine.

Our kits are printable PDFs plus phone pages for each guest. We do not send physical items. If a tabletop box on the shelf is part of the appeal, buy the box.

Questions hosts ask

Is a printable murder mystery cheaper than a boxed one?

Usually, because there is no physical product to make and deliver. A Gather & Gasp standard kit is $19.99 for the whole party, a premium kit is $29.99, and a 3-kit bundle is $44.99.

Can a boxed murder mystery game be adjusted for a different number of guests?

Only a little. Boxed games are written for a set cast, so the usual fixes are doubling up roles or leaving some out. A custom kit is written for your exact headcount instead.

Can I replay a boxed or pre-written mystery?

Only with a new group, because everyone who played already knows the solution. A custom kit is written fresh each time, so you can play again with the same friends.

How much prep does a printable kit need?

You print the files and read the host guide once; you do not memorize anything. You can also send guests their booklets 1 to 2 weeks ahead so they can plan costumes.

What if I am not happy with a custom kit?

Gather & Gasp has a 30-day money-back guarantee: we fix the kit or refund you in full.
