Haunted Gothic Mansion Murder Mystery Party
A seance, a shattered mirror, and one heir who joins the family ghosts.
6-16 players, sweet spot 10 路 the full kit is ready in about 20 minutes. Or name your guests and see who they play, with the opening scene, free in about 30 seconds.
The house has stood on the moor for two centuries, and the family that built it has been dying in it ever since. Tonight the surviving relatives return for a seance in the east wing, the wing that has been locked since the last death. A medium has been hired, the portraits have been uncovered, and the candles are lit in the great hall. Present are a skeptical solicitor, a cousin who claims to hear the walls, a housekeeper who never left, and the heir who intends to sell the place. Then the mirror over the mantel cracks.
Playing this mystery feels like being inside a ghost story where the ghosts might be lying too. Guests accuse each other in candlelight, argue about whether the curse is real, and search for clues in places the kit describes as cold to the touch. Every character has a reason to want the house, or to want it burned. Alliances form around the seance table and collapse in the corridor. The reveal is best delivered by candle, with the medium's bell rung once, and the guilty party revealed as very much flesh and blood.
Perfect for
The definitive Halloween party mystery, and equally good for October birthdays, adult costume parties, and a book club that just finished Rebecca or The Haunting of Hill House.
Cast size
6-16 players, sweet spot 10. Every kit is written for your exact headcount and gender mix, so nobody doubles up and nobody sits out.
Who is at the party
A taste of the cast a haunted gothic mansion kit produces. Your mystery is written fresh, with its own suspects, secrets, and one guilty guest.
The Hired Medium
She has conducted forty seances and never once contacted the dead, though tonight she seemed genuinely frightened.
The Reluctant Heir
He arrived with a buyer's offer in his coat and left the seance table twice, once before the mirror broke.
The Housekeeper Who Stayed
She has kept the east wing locked for twenty years and still carries the only key on a chain around her neck.
The Family Solicitor
He drafted three versions of the will, and only one of them leaves the house standing.
Setting the scene
Costumes
- A long black dress, a lace shawl, and a velvet ribbon around the throat; add a veil for the medium.
- A Victorian mourning suit assembled from a dark blazer, high-collared shirt, and a black scarf tied as a cravat.
- A nightgown or long white dress with grey face powder for the cousin who hears the walls.
- A tweed suit, spectacles, and a leather document case for the solicitor who does not believe in ghosts.
- A grey shawl, a chatelaine of keys on a ribbon, and an apron for the housekeeper.
Food and drink
- A dark and stormy in a smoked glass, or black cherry cola over ice for the non-drinkers, both looking suitably ominous.
- A pot of beef and red wine stew served from a cauldron-shaped pot with crusty bread torn by hand.
- Blackberry and blood orange tart cut into narrow slices and dusted with black cocoa.
- A tray of aged cheeses and dark grapes arranged around a candelabra, the way a neglected great house would put out supper.
Atmosphere
- Cover every mirror with black cloth except one, and crack that one with a strip of clear tape applied in a jagged line.
- Light only with candles and LED tapers; a single red bulb in the hall makes the corridor feel wrong.
- Play a soundtrack of creaking wood, distant thunder, and slow cello; the Crimson Peak score works perfectly.
- Print a few sepia family portraits, hang them slightly crooked, and drape cobwebs from a Halloween shop across the frames.
Host tip
Stage the seance as a real scene: seat everyone around a table with hands touching, dim the room, and read the kit's opening in the medium's voice. A hidden speaker under the table playing one loud knock at the right moment will get a scream. Keep a flashlight for yourself; guests will lose track of clue sheets in the dark. Deliver the reveal at the seance table with the candles relit one by one.

Questions hosts ask
Is this a good murder mystery for a Halloween party?
It is the one we recommend most for Halloween. The costumes overlap with what people already own for October, the decor is candles and cobwebs, and the seance opening gives you a built-in scare. Gather & Gasp kits print in about 20 minutes, so it works even for a party planned this week.
Is it scary enough for horror fans but okay for nervous guests?
The atmosphere does the frightening; the mystery itself is a puzzle with clues and alibis. There is no gore in the kit, and the host guide lets you dial the seance theatrics up or down for your crowd.
Can the characters be named after my guests?
Yes. You can customize every character name when you build the kit, so the reluctant heir shares your brother's name and the medium is your roommate. Kits support 4 to 20 players.
