Can I host a murder mystery party tonight or tomorrow?
Yes, if you have a printer and an hour or two. A Gather & Gasp kit is usually ready 15 to 25 minutes after you order, and it prints at home on letter or A4 paper. Choose the Quick 1 to 2 hour length, text guests their phone links, and you can host the same day. A kit is $19.99.
The timeline for a same-day party
Order first, because the kit is the part that takes time. It is written from scratch for your group and is usually ready in 15 to 25 minutes. We email you when it is done. Bigger groups and long guest lists can take a bit longer, so order early.
While you wait, invite your guests. A text is enough: say the date, the time, the theme, and that everyone gets a secret character.
Choose the Quick length
The Quick option runs 1 to 2 hours with 2 rounds, which suits a weeknight or a short notice. Classic runs 2 to 3 hours and Epic 3 to 4.
A shorter game also helps with last-minute guests, since people are less likely to need to leave early. Pick Casual difficulty if you want easy clues and a straightforward mystery.
Send phone links instead of booklets
You do not have to print and hand out booklets days in advance. Each name tag has a QR code that opens that guest's own character page on their phone, and party mode unlocks the pages round by round.
If you have time before the party, share the QR codes or links by text so guests can read their characters early. Remind them to keep their secrets to themselves. If not, hand out the printed booklets as people arrive.
What to do in your last hour
Read the host guide once. You do not memorize anything, but you should know the flow of the evening. Then print the booklets, name tags, table cards and ballots, and set the cardstock aside for tags if you have it.
Clear a table for dinner or snacks, put out the name tags, and keep a pen for each ballot. Ask guests to wear whatever they have, with a hat or a scarf for fun. Order takeout or ask people to bring a dish.
- Read the host guide through once.
- Print and sort each guest's pages together.
- Set out name tags and table cards.
- Charge your phone for party mode.
- Plan food that needs no cooking during the game.
If someone cancels at the last minute
The host can play the missing character, or redistribute that character's key information among the other guests. If you have time, generate a fresh kit for the new headcount, which takes another 15 to 25 minutes.
